I remember once when I was a kid we moved into a new house in Ohio. This lady came over with some kind of baked brick which she was trying to pass off as a cake. While I could never prove it, I suspected that she had plans to kill everyone in the neighborhood and turn the place into a strip mall.

Pornography is as addictive as any drug. Just ask anyone who sneaks to the computer at midnight to view nude pictures or sex acts. This is all the worse when children are involved.

Citizen Link had this report.

U.S. Attorney General Proposes Changes in Child-Porn Laws
by Pete Winn, associate editor

Alberto Gonzales wants Internet service providers to report violations.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is proposing major changes in child-exploitation laws -- changes that family advocates say are long overdue.

At a speech Thursday at the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the attorney general said Internet service providers (ISPs) are not doing enough to help the government fight child pornography. They must take the issue seriously.

"For starters, let's be clear," Gonzales said, "it is not a victimless crime. Most images of child pornography depict actual sexual abuse of real children. Each image literally documents a crime scene."

Pat Trueman, who headed the Justice Department's war against pornography in the early 1990s, when President Bush's father was in office, said it's a step in the right direction.

"The most important thing the attorney general did," Trueman said, "was to offer legislation that will correct a previous law that will require Internet service providers -- like Google and Yahoo -- to report incidences of child pornography or child sex abuse that they know of online."

If Gonzales' suggestion becomes law, ISPs would be required to provide that information to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which would pass it on to the Justice Department.

The attorney general also wants a law which would require pornographic Web sites to include warning statements and ratings.

"A mandatory rating system would prevent people from inadvertently stumbling across pornographic images on the Internet," Gonzales said.

Daniel Weiss, senior analyst, media and sexuality at Focus on the Family Action, applauded Gonzales for highlighting the dangers.

"He's definitely right to alert parents and the community on how to go about protecting kids," Weiss said. "But on the other hand, the attorney general is talking tough on this issue, just like he talked tough on the issue of obscenity.

"Unfortunately, he's done nothing about obscenity. He said prosecuting obscenity was a chief goal of his term. But we've not seen vigorous obscenity prosecution. Instead, we might call the effort anemic or even pathetic. I wonder if he's proposing new laws that he has no intention of enforcing."

Phil Burress, president of Citizens for Community Values, agreed the Justice Department has long needed to crack down on hardcore pornography.

"I was very disappointed with what he didn't say," he said. "The fact still remains that hardcore, so-called 'adult' pornography, is the leading problem in this country. More children are harmed from hardcore adult pornography than from child pornography. You cannot separate the two. You can't talk about child pornography without talking about hardcore pornography, which is available at many of our hotels. It's available on cable. It's available in video stores. It's running rampant and the Department of Justice is doing nothing about it."

Burress said addiction to pornography generally doesn't start with child pornography.

"They start off with hardcore, sexually explicit adult pornography and they grow into it," he told CitizenLink.

Burress said there are five stages: exposure, addiction, desensitization, escalation and acting out.

"What they do is, they start out with hardcore adult pornography and then their fetish turns to children, and then they start using and producing child pornography, so you cannot separate the two."

Burress said the reason the Justice Department has not engaged in a major crackdown is because of the man who heads the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section of the Justice Department, Drew Oosterbaan.

"We met with him five years ago. He's a hold-over from the Clinton administration," Burress said. "There lies the problem. We, meaning the pro-family movement, complained about this inaction all the way up to then-Attorney General John Ashcroft. We've objected to it every year, because nothing is going to be done by a man who, even under the Clinton administration, refused to enforce the laws against hardcore pornography."

Burress has called for Oosterbaan's replacement with someone who would prosecute obscenity.

In Genesis' 11th chapter the Bible records what might have been humanities most ambishious construction project ever. I will let the Bible set the stage.

As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there. They said to each other, "Come, Let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." they used the brink instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth." (New International Version)

Wow. Impressive. Imaging trying to build a tower all the way to heaven. Now imaging doing it with out a crane or any other piece of modern heavey equipment. Okay, so that has the Tower of Babel got to do with anything? Well two things this week made me think about this famed tower. I will start with the second one first.

Nantucket Votes to Ban Chain Stores

I saw this great article from the AP on Yahoo.

Nantucket joined several other historic tourist towns across the country in approving a measure that would ban chain stores from the island's downtown, a move endorsed by more than 480 residents at a town meeting.

The rule would bar any new chains with more than 14 outlets that have standardized menus, trademarks, uniforms or other homogeneous decor from opening downtown. The ban would not affect gas stations, grocery stores, banks and other service providers.

"I'm extremely gratified," said independent book seller Wendy Hudson, who proposed the ban. "I guess it feels validating ... people saw the balance and need to protect our character rather than this amendment just being another new regulation."

The other thing that made me think of Babel was my new job. I am not working for a very large corportation and what is more I am working at the headquarters. I was walking through one of the company's many large rooms surrounded by co-workers.

I will let you draw your own conclusions, but that was what I was thinking.

I recently published an Olympics related article. Since I have been giving some pretty extensive attention to the Olympics of late, I thought I would share part of that article here. I hope you like it.

I have a rather politically incorrect confession to make. As a boy in the 1970’s, I fried ants. Not fried like you would make French fries. No, I used a magnifying glass and the power of the sun to incinerate thousands of the little buggers on sidewalks and roadways throughout my youth.

I am sure that somewhere in the subterranean world of ants there is a wanted poster with my boyhood picture on it and a description of a heat ray.

I make this confession only after learning that the ancient Greeks probably fried ants too. This is of course not an historical fact, but rather a deduction, since it seems that those crafty Greeks used a similar method (sun + glass) to light the first Olympic flame. In fact, the current Olympic flame which is bound for Torino, Italy was also ignited with light.

Here is the story. The tradition of the Olympic flame and its associated Olympic torch developed from Greek polytheism. In ancient Greece, a permanent flame burned in the sanctuary of Olympia, venue for the ancient Olympic Games. Since the flame was part of the worship of the gods, it need to be pure and it would seem the Greeks thought that just whipping out a Zippo would be beneath the dignity of the gods. Instead, these Greeks used a skaphia, which according to people way smarter than I am, is the ancestor of the modern parabolic mirror. The skaphia concentrated the sun’s energy and then reflected it outward, creating an intense heat ray which would have made Flash Gordon jealous. This heat ray was concentrated on the center of a torch and voila, the torch burst into flame.

Mark 10:17 to 27 tells us the story of a rich man that fell on his knees before Christ and asked what he must do to have eternal life. After questioning this rich fellow, Christ told him to give all he had to the poor. "At this," Mark wrote, "the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth."

Christ then told his disciples, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." Or to give a more modern example, it is easier to drive a Ford Expedition through a key hole than for a person in love with the things of this world to enter God's kingdom.

The problem this rich fellow had was that he was too comfortable in this world. He was too much in love with the things he had. This world with all of its pleasures and treasures is not a Christian's home. Our real home is in the kingdom to come, so we cannot allow ourselves to be weighted down with the cares or the pleasures of this place. We have to remember that our X-Box, our snow board, our new car, our cool clothes, our favorite television show, or even our favorite music must all take a back seat to our worship.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism asks, "What is the chief end of man?" and answers, "Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever."

Help me overcome my unbelief.

As I was reading the Bible this morning, I happened on a passage in Mark, which I have read several times. The verse is Mark 9:24. In the New International Version its reads "Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, 'I do believe; help me overcome my unbelif.'"

The quote was just perfect for where I am in my life right now, so much so that I needed to share it. In this story Christ has just come down from the mountain of transfiguration to find that his disciples had been unable to drive a demon out of a young boy. The child had been prone to convulsions, foaming at the mouth, and could not speak.

Christ ask the boy's father how long the child had suffered.

"'From Childhood,' He answered. 'It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anthing, take pity on us and help us.'" (verse 22).

"'If I can?' said Jesus. 'Everything is possible for him who believes.'" (verse 23)

And then the father says what is probably true for a lot of Christians from time to time, I believe, but help me overcome my unbelief. Often times belief is really a mixture of belief and, well, a measure of doubt. We know with our heads what God wants for our lives. We know how we should live, But doubt and temptation still sneak in. In is in these moments that we should do what this father does: state our faith and asked God to sure it up for us.

She is also the first Russian lady skater to win a silver medal at the Olympic Winter Games. Slutskaya invented the double Biellmann-spin with foot change. At the 2000 Grand Prix Final in Lyon she became the first woman to land a triple Lutz-triple loop combination in competition and was awarded a 6.0 for technical merit. At Worlds 2001 she became the first woman to land a triple Lutz-triple loop-double toeloop combination. Slutskaya married Sergei Mikheev in August 1999. She was left off the National team for Europeans and Worlds in 1999 but came back strong the following year. Slutskaya missed the 2003 World Championships due to the severe illness of her mother. She was sidelined by illness (vasculitis) the whole 2003/2004 season except for Worlds. Slutskaya withdrew from the 2006 Nationals."

"Elena Sokolova," the ISU said, "went back to train with former coach Viktor Kudriavtsev in fall 2002 after training under Alexei Mishin in St. Petersburg. When Sokolova suffered a concussion in summer 2002, she considered quitting skating, but her mother convinced her to stay in. Sokolova competed in the 1998 Olympic Winter Games, placing 7th."

"Carolina Kostner," the ISU said, "is the first Italian lady to medal at World Championschips (bronze in 2005) since Susanna Driano took the bronze medal at the 1978 World Championships. Kostner is also the first Italian single skater to win a medal at Junior Worlds (bronze in 2003). She is a cousin and godchild of famous Italian skier Isolde Kostner and says she feels inspired by her. Kostner's mother Patrizia was a nationally ranked figure skater in the 1970s and her father Erwin played ice hockey on the National Italian team at World Championships and Olympic Games. Kostner has two brothers, Martin (one year older) and Simon (three years younger). Simon plays ice hockey."

Here are several press reports.

SALVATORE ZANCA, Associated Press Writer via Yahoo Sport.
Slutskaya wins record seventh Euro title

LYON, France (AP) -- Irina Slutskaya would rather not think too much about the Olympics just yet. She knows a lot of things can go wrong.

"You never know what can happen," Slutskaya said. "It's ice. It's slippery. It's life."

Regardless, she will head into Turin in a less than a month with a record seventh European figure skating title -- one more than Katarina Witt and Sonja Henie. Henie and Witt still have something Slutskaya doesn't -- an Olympic gold medal.

Henie dominated Europe in the 1930s, and added 10 world titles and three Olympic golds. Witt won her six Europeans in the 1980s, along with four worlds, and two Olympics.

"Katarina Witt, for me, was the best skater in the world. I never, never thought I could beat her," said Slutskaya, who has won world titles in 2002 and 2005.

Now she could be the one whose record will be broken.

"Maybe in 10 or 20 years, somebody will beat the record and they will say, `Oh! You know you beat the record of Irina Slutskaya."'

Read the rest of this article.

AFP News via Yahoo News.
Slutskaya in seventh heaven with record European win

World champion Irina Slutskaya won a record seventh women's title at the European figure skating championships.

She took gold ahead of fellow Russian Elena Sokolova, the 2003 world and European silver medallist, with Carolina Kostner of Italy taking bronze after the free skating final.

Olympic silver-medallist Slutskaya overtakes the legendary Sonja Henie of Norway, who won six titles in a row between 1931-1936 and Germany's Katarina Witt, winner from 1983-1988.

"Katarina Witt was for me the best skater in the world," said Slutskaya.

Read the rest of this article.

Evelina Christillin: with the Olympic Winter Games, Torino Capital of Culture

TORINO 2006: The Olympic Flame arrives in Venice

TORINO 2006: Bocelli And “Carnevale” To Bring The Games To A Close

German Relay Squad is still the Benchmark

2006 Olympics Torino: World Cup biathlon relay results January 12.

Olympics: Ice Hockey in 1968

Italy's Giorgio Rocca wins another World Cup slalom race

Results from the men's World Cup slalom on Jan. 8th

Results from the women's World Cup slalom on January 8, 2006

Results from the women's World Cup slalom event on Jan. 8th

Results from the women's World Cup biathlon 12.5km line start event on January 8th

2006 Olympics Torino: World Cup biathlon 15km results Jan 8th

Winter Olympic Facts: Ice Hockey Winners.

2006 Olympics Torino: Jan. 7th Biathlon World Cup results 10km sprint

2006 Olympics Torino: Jan 7th World Cup nordic skiing results Men's World Cup nordic skiing

2006 Olympics Torino: Jan. 7th World Cup skiing results Men's World Cup giant slalom results

2006 Olympics Torino: Jan. 7th.
“The IOC declared that Italyart is the best cultural programme ever presented in all the editions of the Games” Evelina Christillin declares proudly, TOROC vicar vice-president and responsible for the Cultural Olympiads. Actually the cultural programme which will accompany the athletes’ competitions on ice and snow is extraordinary in quality and quantity in terms of proposals. “When we started to think about this great project – Christillin underlines – we were faced with a vast offer and many possibilities to interpret this opportunity. Together with some important cultural operators of the territory, coordinated by Giovanni De Luna and me, we thought about methodology guide lines in which to record the project, which were then published in the volume “Il linguaggio dei corpi” (The Language of the Bodies). From there we worked at an operative level with Councillors of local institutions as well as the Cultural Assets Office and Cultural Institutions operating on the territory. A mixed work team that, instead of proposing each its own programme, was able to optimise the financial resources of every reality, giving life to a homogeneous and very rich playbill”.

The Olympic flame today arrived in the city of Venice, where it will stay until tomorrow. It will then continue its journey, visiting the town of Trieste tomorrow. This is the 39th day of the Torino 2006 Olympic Torch Relay. The XX Olympic Winter Games – Torino 2006 begin in 24 days.

Transported by Gondola
Today, the Olympic flame was transported by gondola across Venice’s Grand Canal as part of the 2006 Torch Relay. Venice will show its passion for the Turin Games this evening, when a party is held in the Piazza San Marco. Perhaps fitting for a city with canals and surrounded by water, one of the torchbearers during the Relay today was Federica Pellegrini, Olympic silver medallist in the women’s 200m freestyle at the Athens Games in 2004.

Torino 2006 Olympic Torch Relay
The Torino 2006 Olympic Torch Relay began on 8 December 2005 in Rome and will tour the length and breadth of Italy for 64 days. It will cover a total distance of 11,300km, visiting 140 cities, 107 provinces and all of Italy’s regions, as well as the neighbouring National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of San Marino, Slovenia, Austria, Switzerland and France. There will be 10,001 torchbearers, who will carry the flame to Turin, where it will arrive on 10 February 2006.

The Closing Ceremony of the XX Olympic Winter Games - Torino 2006, will take place on 26 February 2006 at 20:00 in the Olympic Stadium in Turin. The athletes of the Games and the spectators at this event will have the opportunity to experience up-close the Italian “Carnevale”, which is to be the main theme of this spectacular event. The athletes, spectators and viewing public will also hear Andrea Bocelli sing during the ceremony, as well as witness the passing of the Olympic flag from Turin to Vancouver.

Commedia dell’Arte
The Director of the Closing Ceremony will be Daniele Finzi Pasca, who is well known internationally for his circus-based theatre performances. Finzi Pasca will interweave the elation and the fantasy of the world of “Carnevale” with the sounds, colours and actions typical of the circus and of the Commedia dell’Arte. Using over 2,000 different outfits inspired by the circus, some of which featured in the Frederico Fellini film “The Clowns”, the formal sections of the Closing Ceremony will alternate with artistic moments that will be surprising and transgressive. These moments will be inspired by the creativity of street artists, of travelling shows and of the typical Italian “feste in piazza”.

Andrea Bocelli
One of the high points of the Ceremony will undoubtedly be the performance by Andrea Bocelli, who will be one of the main acts of the show. Bocelli, who is a world-famous tenor with a tendency for pop, will use his powerful and melodic voice to stir the worldwide audience of the Closing Ceremony. It is precisely for his great capacity to communicate and to move a vast and varied public that the organisers of the Olympic Ceremonies wanted Bocelli to enhance the Grand Finale of Torino 2006.

Hand Over
The Closing Ceremony will be Turin’s chance to bid farewell to the XX Olympic Winter Games, by having a big party of fire and colours, masks and acrobatics, games and rituals. It will see fireflies transformed into stars, men will become kites and heroes will be portrayed not as warriors but as athletes and champions. However, this will not be the end of the Olympic adventure, as Mayor of Turin, Sergio Chiamparino, will hand the Olympic flag over to the Mayor of Vancouver, Sam Sullivan, as Vancouver 2010 gears-up to become the next Olympic Winter Games Host City. This segment of the event will also include an eight-minute show from Vancouver 2010 that will include Canadian rock star Avril Lavigne. Both Lavigne and Boccelli feature in the IOC's current Celebrate Humanity advertising campaign.
TORINO 2006
The Olympic Winter Games will be held in Turin from 10 to 26 February 2006. The Winter Games comprise seven different sports and 15 different disciplines, which will be played out in eight different competition sites. Around 2,500 athletes, 650 judges and umpires and one million spectators are expected to participate in this 20th edition of the Winter Games.
Well worth the read.

What’s the most important thing most of us will do? The answer is, obviously, raise our kids. And that’s what New York Times columnist David Brooks wrote in his New Year’s Day column, but believe it or not, he caught all sorts of grief.

Brooks was responding to a recent piece in the American Prospect by Linda Hirshman of Brandeis. She criticized the idea that “staying home with the kids is just one more feminist option.”

For Hirshman, “the family—with its repetitious, socially invisible, physical tasks— . . . allows fewer opportunities for full human flourishing than public spheres like the market or the government.” She adds that women assigning domestic roles to themselves is as “unjust” as their being forced into these roles. Well, so much for women’s “choice.”

Brooks calls this whole assertion “astonishing.” He urges his readers to look back over their own lives. Then he asks, “Which memories do you cherish more, those with your family or those at the office?”

While Brooks found Hirshman’s views of the family “astonishing,” there was nothing surprising about the reactions to Brooks’s column. The most virulent—and, thus, easiest to disregard—objections accused Brooks of having a “problem with educated, achieving women.” They caricatured his position as saying that women should be content with “birthin’ babies and fixin’ vittles.”

And of course, their comments drip with contempt for the millions of women who have chosen to stay at home with their children.

Read the rest of this commentary...

The German Relay squad, today consisting of Michael Roesch, Alexander Wolf, Sven Fischer and Michael Greis, is still the measure of all things, winning the third race in a row today. Strong performances on the cross country course as well as at the shooting range (Michael Roesch used all three German spares in the standing session, all others shot clean) left absolutely no chance for the other squads. Austria (Daniel Mestotisch, Wolfgang Perner, Ludwig Gredler, Christoph Sumann) was the surprise runner-up, 41.2 seconds behind, also using just three extra rounds, also all by the runner on the first leg, also in the standing session. Norway (Halvard Hanevold, Emil Svendsen, Frode Andresen, Stian Eckhoff) needed eight spares and finished third, 59.6 seconds behind the Germans.

Great shooting and a fantastic overall consistency were the keys to the victory of the German team today. Their running shape is quite outstanding, although they didn't score the fastest course times today. Combined with shooting results like today, however, their performance must have been rather demoralizing for the competition.

Perhaps one of the biggest stories that never was, or at least perhaps in recent memory, is the case of Roger Keith Coleman.

Coleman was executed in May of 1992 for the rape and murder of Wanda McCoy in 1981. McCoy was just 19-year-old at the time of the murder and was Coleman's sister-in-law.

Although nearly all of the evidence (including the best available DNA tests of the era) pointed to Coleman's guilt, he loudly and consistently proclaimed his own innocence.

In fact, just before Coleman was executed he said, "An innocent man is going to be murdered tonight." And then challenged the fairness of the death penalty.

A recent DNA test, conducted at the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto, proved beyond any doubt that Coleman, who had previously been convicted of rape, as in fact the very rapist who murdered McCoy. But if the test had gone the other way. If this new DNA test had proven Coleman innocent, a news media firestorm would have swept across the world. Nearly every media outlet, nearly every nation would have no doubt carried the story of the innocent man sent to his death for a crime he did not commit, and in all likelihood, Virginia Governor, Mark R. Warner, would have used the case to advance his political career and his likely run for the U.S. presidency in 2008.

As it is, this case ads little fuel to the fire, so to speak, about the death penalty. I am sure however that this is not a dead issue in any sense. The death penalty is an extraordinary sentence, which allows little room for error. Furthermore, there seems to be something inherently wrong with giving a government the right to take the life of its citizens under any circumstances.

In 1968, winning the Olympic ice hockey tournament, meant winning everything in the world. This one tournament represented every major hockey title the International Ice Hockey Federation had to offer.

The tournament, played at the Palais des Sports, counted for the Olympic title, the International Ice Hockey Federation's European Championship, and the International Ice Hockey Federation's World Championship. So for players this was your one chance to stand atop the hockey world.

There is nothing good that I can write about war, in the sense of what war is or the execution of war. Rather, war is a horrible invention.

Nothing bring this point home more than when I read news articles about American warriors dying in Iraq. Today's headline, U.S. Black Hawk crashes in Iraq, 12 dead (Reuters via Yahoo News), has made my point very clear.

Yet, at the same time, I find I am drawn to the things of war and to the results of war. In fact, in my darkest moments, I wish I could throw off the responsibilities of home and family and go fight and even die myself. I find this relationship, this sort of double mind very strange, and yet I believe it is common.

I suppose it is in some way the same reaction that some men have when they watch sports, like boxing. As we watch others or even think of others engaging in sport, our heart rate increases to match the rhythm of the game or of the battle. We become in touch with our most basic need for excitement. My children do this when they pay games on the X-box you see them shift and move even dodge as they watch the action on the screen.

It is this sort of relationship that I think I have to war. I recognize that while war itself is a bad thing, the results (1) in a better, more free world, and (2) in the way it changes some men are in fact a good thing. I suppose that I am saying that war acts to clean a fellow of all worldly things. In war, in death, things like money, televisions, porn, new clothes, iPods, etc. mean nothing. War, because of its horror and action, causes a man to recognize what is really important. It is the reason that some many solders seek God.

Here is a bit about the sport.
From Olympic.org

The word “hockey” comes from the old French word "hocquet", meaning "stick". The origins of ice hockey are unclear, but it is widely accepted that the British are responsible for bringing hockey to North America. Soldiers stationed in Nova Scotia, Canada, played the earliest games. In 1879, a group of college students at McGill University in Montreal organised competitions and developed the first known set of hockey rules. The sport migrated south to the United States during the 1890s. The first known hockey games took place between Johns Hopkins and Yale Universities in 1895. The first Olympic Games to include ice hockey for men were the Antwerp Games in 1920. However, the first Olympic Winter Games took place in 1924 in Chamonix.

At the Olympic Winter Games, women compete in an eight-team tournament (women's hockey was added to the Olympic Winter Games programme in Nagano in 1998), whereas men compete in a 12-team tournament. A team must not have more than six players on the ice while play is in progress. Typically, these players are one goalkeeper, two defenders, two wings and one centre. Fewer players can be on the ice as a result of penalties: a goalkeeper can be replaced by a skater during a delayed penalty, or at any other time of the game, at the team's risk. A regular game consists of three 20-minute periods, with a 15-minute intermission after the first and second periods. Teams change ends for each period. If a tie occurs in a medal-round game in which a winner must be determined, a five-minute sudden-victory overtime period is played. In the gold medal game, a 20-minute sudden-victory period is played subsequent to another 15-minute intermission. In the case of a tie after any sudden-victory period, a game-winning penalty shoot competition takes place to determine the winner.

I read a couple of top ten news stories lists. I thought it would be interesting to compare these two here.

World Magazine.
World magazine is one of my favorite news sources. They generally do a good job of providing fair news coverage, but are not afraid to tell you that they have a particular way of looking at their world. Here is the World Magazine Top Ten News Stories of the year as published in their December 31/January 7 issue.

(1) Katrina Disaster Defined, by Marvin Olasky.
(2) EarthMovers, Disaster Upon Disaster Beyond U.S. Shores, by Jamie Dean.
(3) Iraq, War and Progress, by Mindy Belz.
(4) Africa Discovered, LIVE8, G8, and Other Greats, by Priya Abraham.
(5) Supreme Changes, the High Court, by Lynn Vincent.
(6) Wrongful 'Right' the Case of Terri Schiavo, by Lynn Vincent.
(7) From John Paull II to Benedict XVI, by Edward E. Plowman.
(8) Israel, Leaving the Land (and the Likud), by Jil Nelson.
(9) Terror, Al-Qauda Affiliates Attack, by Priya Abraham.
(10) Security Storm, Reform Plan that Didn't (about Social Security), by Timothy Lamar.

EDITORS COMMENTS. I think the world list is pretty good. I am not sure I would have put Social Security on my list, in fact I am sure I would not, but that may have something to do with perspective. I am in my mid-30s.

The Paris Beacon, of Paris Ill. had a top ten that reflected their local perspective (since I was speaking of perspective), and they did not include Social Security either. Here are the highlights of the article from Jenny Barkley.

1. Feb. 11 - Soldiers of the 1544th transportation Company arrive at Volk Airfield near Ft. McCoy, Wisc. and are greeted by loved ones after spending a year serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Feb. 22, after months of speculation and weeks of preparation, Paris opens its arms and embraces 1544th soldiers. The unit lost five soldiers while serving in Iraq...

2. Aug. 28 – The arrival of Hurricane Katrina...

3. Jan. 12 - Hospital groundbreaking...

4. May 19 – On the last day of school, an accident involving five Paris High School students leaves three in the hospital.

5. Sept. 7 – The City of Paris continues to pursue underground water sources and authorizes an investment of $150,000 to do so. The search continues through the end of the year. Oct. 25, announcement is made of two test wells dug on the Donnelly site near the Wabash River.

6. Aug. 2 – Paris Arkay Industries announces its closing in September. The facility employs approximately 50 people.

7. Feb. 17 - Crestwood Eighth Grade boys basketball team earns a State Championship title...

8. High profile court cases:

9. June 15 – The whereabouts of Robin Mewes who has been missing for 15 years is determined and verified. She disappeared Sept. 15, 1990, from Paris and was last seen in Terre Haute, Ind. In the meantime, she changed her name, moved out of state, graduated from college, married and earned a master’s degree and is gainfully employed.

10. July 13 – The Edgar County Board passes a resolution to consolidate county voting locations into 10 sites in accordance with federal mandates of the Help America Vote Act of 2002.

Read the whole article from the Paris Beacon.

EDITORS COMMENTS. The Paris Beacon's list raises questions about what makes a news story important. This list focused very much on the happenings of one local community and ignored what may have been larger stories like some mentioned in the World Magazine List. In spite of my earlier comment about social security, I think that the Paris Beacon may have been a bit too short sighted in its list for example mentioning that your local boys basketball team won, but ignoring the reshaping of the U.S. Supreme Court.

German Kati Wilhelm continues her strong season with another win, her second win of the winter. Despite her single error in the prone session, she stayed ahead of Sweden's Anna Carin Olofsson (no error, +5.9 seconds) and Norway's Linda Tjoerhom (no error, +54.4 seconds) and increased her lead in the World Cup Total Score. Only five of the 90 athletes managed to shoot clean in very difficult conditions – again and again, thick swaths of fog wandered though the shooting range, obstructing the visibility considerably at times.

Anna Carin Olofsson had been one of the fastest runners in the most recent events, and she had been shooting very consistently as well, which resulted in two victories in Osrblie. She had picked the very low number two in the draw on Friday and was expected to provide a first point of reference.
Two of her greatest rivals started just a few minutes behind her: Sandrine Bailly (FRA) had number six on her bib, Kati Wilhelm (GER) number nine.

14:37 CET - First Lap - Olofsson has set a first best at the 0.8 km intermediate. She is 1.6 seconds faster than Mali (SLO).
14:39 CET - First Lap - But now it's Wilhelm, who tops the rankings at the first split. Wilhelm is 3.1 seconds ahead of Olofsson.
Was Wilhelm already burning the candle at both ends or was Olofsson simply not as fast as before the Christmas break? The Swede took her time in the prone shooting session …

14:41 CET - First Shoot - Olofsson clears! We'll see if Sandrine Bailly can shoot a little faster in a few minutes.
14:42 CET - First Shoot - Bailly starts with an error, and another... Three errors for Bailly! Wilhelm is next ...
