Unacceptable Gay Bashing

I was very upset when I read BETH RUCKER's Associated Press story today about so called "Christians" protesting at soldiers funerals with signs which read, "God hates fags."

Seems some folks from Kansas have gotten it into their head that U.S. Soldiers, Marines, Airman, and Sailors are dying because they defend a nation which harbors homosexuals. These folks think that God is judging America because of the sin of homosexuality. Their position and their protests are disgusting, tasteless, and sinful.

Disgusting.
The actions of the members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas were disgusting. Webster defined disgusting as revolting and as something which provokes loathing, repugnance, or aversion; disgusting is to be offensive. To hold a protest of almost any kind at a furneral causes just such a reaction. It is one thing to hold or even to express in a public forum a position like the one these people seem to, but it is a far different thing to express that opinion at a service for the dead.

Tasteless.
The actions of the members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas were tasteless. That is to say that these actions did not exhibit good taste, Christian love, or civility.

Sinful.
The actions of the members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas were sinful. In my opinion it is a sin to misrepresent God and Christ to the world. God does not, as these people see to believe, "hate fags." God may, and I believe does, hate sin, but he loves the sinner. In fact, Romans 5:18 tells us, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Homosexual is not the unforgivable sin.
I have written before in this blog, and I will write it again now. Homosexuality is not the unforgivable sin. Homosexuality is a sin, no doubt about it. Practicing homosexuality is habitual sin. But homosexuality can be and often is forgiven.

Homosexuality is no worse or no better than any other sin which men commit. Cheating on your wife or husband is just as bad. Cheating on your taxes is just as bad. And misrepresenting God and the Gospel is just as bad.

Christians need not to attack homosexuals, but love them, encourage them to seek God, and let God worry about the sin in their lives. Christians need to, as our Lord did, seek out the people who need God, whether they are homosexual or not, and certainly that is not what these folks are doing.

Anyway, so that you know what got me up set, here is part of the AP story and a like to where I found it on Yahoo.

Anti-Gay Church Protests at GI Funerals
By BETH RUCKER, Associated Press Writer

SMYRNA, Tenn. - Members of a church say God is punishing American soldiers for defending a country that harbors gays, and they brought their anti-gay message to the funerals Saturday of two Tennessee soldiers killed in Iraq.

The church members were met with scorn from local residents. They chased the church members cars' down a highway, waving flags and screaming "God bless America."

"My husband is over there, so I'm here to show my support," 41-year-old Connie Ditmore said as she waved and American flag and as tears came to her eyes. "To do this at a funeral is disrespectful of a family, no matter what your beliefs are."

The Rev. Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist in Kansas, contends that American soldiers are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God for protecting a country that harbors gays. The church, which is not affiliated with a larger denomination, is made up mostly of Phelps' children, grandchildren and in-laws.

The church members carried signs and shouted things such as "God hates fags" and "God hates you."
